THE MUMMY 5: CURSE OF THE DESERT KINGS

Curse of the Desert Kings confidently sidesteps the urban adventure of its predecessors to return to the sun-scorched, sand-shrouded heart of the franchise’s horror roots—but on a scale previously unimagined. This isn’t a tale of a single resurrected priest, but of an entire dynasty of forgotten pharaohs awakening in unison, their curse a tangible, spreading blight that transforms the desert into a kingdom of the dead. The film’s greatest strength is this grand, apocalyptic vision, realized through massive, breathtaking set pieces: undead legions emerging from sandstorms, shadowy sand-beasts stalking caravans, and a ghost train barreling through the dunes that becomes an unforgettable centerpiece of supernatural dread.

The star-powered trio of Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Scarlett Johansson provides a dynamic, if occasionally lore-bending, core. Johnson brings his signature brand of mythic physicality, Statham offers grounded, tactical grit, and Johansson adds a layer of enigmatic, arcane intelligence as a scholar with a personal stake in the curse. Their chemistry fuels the film’s relentless pacing, as they’re thrust from one explosive chase and desperate standoff to the next. The action is inventive and large-scale, seamlessly blending modern military hardware with ancient, supernatural threats in a satisfying, chaotic ballet of survival.

However, the film’s boldest strokes are also its most divisive. By expanding the curse into a transmissible, almost sentient force and rewriting key rules of the franchise’s established mythology, Desert Kings knowingly invites heated debate among purists. This narrative ambition, while refreshing, occasionally comes at the expense of cohesive character depth. Yet, as a pure, high-octane spectacle of ancient evil unleashed, it delivers in spades. With a score of 8.5/10, The Mummy 5 is a thrilling, sand-swept ride. It may rewrite some of the sacred texts, but it does so with such bombastic conviction and visual grandeur that it’s hard not to be swept away by the sheer, cursed spectacle of it all.
