Under the newly passed legislation, a bipartisan “truth commission” will collect testimony from survivors and local residents regarding alleged misconduct at the 7,600-acre ranch.

The four-member panel will also seek to identify guests, associates, and state officials who may have known about — or participated in — unlawful activities at Zorro Ranch. Lawmakers emphasized that the investigation could lay the groundwork for future criminal prosecutions.

The bill passed unanimously in the New Mexico House of Representatives and authorizes a $2.5 million investigation with subpoena power, giving the commission authority to compel testimony and documents. 📂

State Rep. Andrea Romero, a Democrat and co-sponsor of the legislation, stated:

“He was basically doing anything he wanted in this state without any accountability whatsoever.”
